History

B-25J-15-NC 44-28833 was delivered on July 21, 1944. Her first assignment was to Columbia Army Air Base, South Carolina. She was stationed at Columbia AAF for training duties until the end of the war. Shortly after VJ Day in September 1945, she was transferred to Shaw AAF, South Carolina where she was used as a proficiency and utility transport until placed into open storage at South Plains Field, Texas in June 1946. In 1947 she was transferred to Pyote AFB, Texas for continued storage. She was withdrawn from storage at Pyote in October 1952 and passed through maintenance at Brookley Field, Alabama for reassignment to active duty. After refurbishing, she was sent to Norton AFB, California in January 1953 where she was assigned to the 27th Air Division Headquarters. She was assigned to proficiency flying and administrative duties. A majority of the flying done by her during this period was for transportation of inspection groups and personnel within the 27th Air Division command. She was used in this capacity until retired and sent to Davis-Monthan AFB in December l957 for storage. She was declared surplus in April 1958. She was purchased through a government sale at Norton AFB by Ralph Richardson on October 1, 1958. He converted her to a tanker configuration operated under the name of Richardson's Airway. She was first test flown as a tanker on April 23, 1959. In 1960 she was sold to Red Dodge Inc. and continued in service in the tanker role until a landing accident at Bremerton, Washington on August 24, 1961 due to a collapsed nose gear ended her flying days. Her remains sat for over twenty years at the Bremerton Airport until acquired by Mr. Robert Schlaefli of Port Orchard, Washington. She was eventually moved by road to Port Orchard, Washington were she remained in storage. In 1999 she was sold to Ken McBride and was moved to Northern California where the new owner is storing the aircraft for a possible restoration.
