B-25J-20-NC 44-29128

History

B-25J-20-NC 44-29128 was delivered on September 7, 1944. She saw extensive use during the later part of WW II in training B-25 crews at Greenville AAF, South Carolina. While she was stationed at Greenville she was used in pilot and crew familiarization and type rating to the B-25. She served the entire war at Greenville operating from September 1944 until November 1945. In November 1945 she was transferred to Shaw AAF, South Carolina. After a period of storage there she was used for transition training and administrative duties. After nearly three years at Shaw she was flown to open storage along with many other active B-25s in the USAAF inventory, to South Plains Field, Texas in June 1948. In 1951 after three years of inactivity she was recalled refitted and transferred to the RCAF in 1952. The following summary of assignments are listed on her record card:

Once in Canada, she was assigned the RCAF serial of 5236. She was initially assigned to pilot and crew training. In 1955 however, she returned to the United States on loan to the Hughes Company of California. Hughes used her for testing Canadian modifications that the RCAF wanted to make on their B-25s to conform to their specific needs. These tests included carburetor intake changes and several electronic and radar modifications. At this time she was also modified to TB-25M standards with new updated radar. She returned to the RCAF in 1956 and served with No. 10 TSU before ending its RCAF days with No. 2 Air Observer Squadron training airborne radar crews. She was placed in storage at Lincoln Park, Alberta and sold surplus in April 1962. The following summary of assignments are listed on her record card:

Columbus Woods of Lewiston, Montana purchased her from RCAF storage in Alberta along with four other B-25s in 1962. Mr. Woods also acquired another group of ex-RCAF B-25s around this same time. From these two groups, nine B-25s were eventually resold to the Venezuelan Air Force in l963. Her fate however, followed a different path. She was sold to Roy Egland of Missoula, Montana in 1962. It was an interesting if checkered civilian career for the aircraft. Operated by Mr. Egland for several months after his purchase, over the next couple of years she was sold, repossessed and resold from potential buyers and possible illegal use. She was last registered to the Labate Corporation of California in November 1965. She was confiscated in Mexico in l968 for alleged drug running. She was taken under government control and stored at Mexico City’s international airport. After sitting idle for some years in Mexico City she was donated to the Museo Technologico de la Comision Federal de Electricidad. She was placed on a pylon at the museum administration building in Chapultepec Park. The engines were removed but the propellers remain being attached on a shaft to the firewall. She remains there to this day.
