History

The B-25J-20 SN 44-29835 was delivered on October 6, l944 and assigned to Randolph Field, Texas where she was attached to the 2531st Base Unit. She was used by the pilot instructors training and qualification unit. As one of many available aircraft at the time she was excess to the base units needs and was transferred to Brooks Field, Texas. At Brooks she was used for twin-engine pilot transitioning training but after two months at Brooks Field she was sent to Enid AAF, Oklahoma in March 1945. At Enid she was again used as a multi-engine pilot trainer until the end of WW II. In December 1945 she was sent to St. Louis AAF, Missouri and attached to the base administrative unit. Recalled from St. Louis in March of 1946 she was sent to Buckley Field in Colorado to operate with the base unit there in an administrative capacity. At Buckley she supported the photographic training unit that was based there. After three months at Buckley she was transferred to Chanute AAF, Illinois in mid l946 where she was assigned to a technical training unit used for crew training in electronic systems. The base units at Chanute were reorganized and consolidated into one major base command for the technical training command which became the 3499th Technical Training Wing with the inception of the USAF in l947. The Training Wing at Chanute was used for electronic training from WW II until the base was deactivated in 1991. She was used for testing and training at Chanute from June 1946 until December 1958 with only minor periods detached for off base training or maintenance. She was retired from service in 1958 along with the rest of the Air Force B-25 inventory and retired to Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. The following summary of assignments are listed on her record card:

She was sold surplus in 1959. Early civilian records indicate she was involved in several paper sales before being converted to a borate tanker in l961. After converted she flew as tanker C 09 with Jerome Eddy until she was withdrawn from tanker duties along with the rest of the tanker B-25s in 1962. After being grounded by the US Forest Service she, along with the other B-25 tanker aircraft was abandoned until acquired by G.F. Rowsey in March 1965. She was reworked back to a more stock aircraft and was part of the early collection of aircraft that formed the Confederate Air Force organization (now Commemorative Air Force). Eventually she became the registered property of the Confederate Air Force and flew in support of their operations with the name "Rowdys Raider". Time and nature took their toll on the aircraft and when extensive corrosion was found during an inspection she was deemed too costly to repair and the aircraft was grounded and put on display at the then home of the Confederate Air Force in Harlingen, Texas. In l980 the USAF wanted a B-25 for display at Lackland AFB, Texas. She was eventually donated to the Air Force Museum Program from the CAF. She was formally accepted by the Air Force on December 12, 1980. She was disassembled and trucked to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas where she was rebuilt and displayed outside at the base museum on the perimeter of the parade grounds. She was marked with the display serial of 43-5103 (actually a B-25H serial number). She has had a couple of paint scheme changes over the years from olive drab to natural aluminum. She remains at this location today in company with a good selection of other Air Force aircraft.
