History

The B-25J-30-NC SN 44-86791 now flying as "Mitchell III" was delivered on July 5, 1945. Her initial Assignment was to Yuma, Arizona. In September of 1945, she was moved to Mather Field, California. By December of 1957, she was flown to storage. She was purchased by Ace Smelting of Phoenix, Arizona in May of 1959. Her civil registration of N8196H was assigned. She was then sold to Merrill and Richard Wein of Fairbanks, Alaska. In June of 1961, she was sold to Merric Inc. of Fairbanks, Alaska. She was flown as "Tanker #5". She was sold to Frontier Flying Service of Fairbanks, Alaska in May of 1962. In February of 1963, she was sold to Aero Retardant of Fairbanks, Alaska. Pacific Alaska Airlines purchased her in June of 1977. In August of 1979, she was sold to Donald Gilbertson of Fairbanks, Alaska. She was used in the television production of "Young Joe, The Forgotten Kennedy". She was sold to Aero Heritage Inc. of Melbourne, Australia in June of 1982. She was restored by Aero Nostalgia of Stockton, California and ferried from the United States to Australia in December of 1983. She was registered as VH-XXV and flew as RAAF Mitchell A47-31 until 1985. After her last flight on November 30, 1987, she was put in long term storage. In March of 1999, she was purchased by Yanks Air Museum. She was shipped from Sydney to her new home in Chino to undergo an extensive restoration. In May of 2002, her current registration was issued as N6116X. Her first flight after restoration was June 22, 2002.
